Network Administrator

Department: Business Technology

Location: Winnipeg

Reports to: Manager of Business Technology

Date: March 2012


Job Summary:

The Network Administrator’s role is to design, install, configure, monitor, and troubleshoot LAN/WAN devices & applications while ensuring high levels of availability. This individual is also responsible for implementing and overseeing network policies and procedures to ensure the availability and security of the network and critical applications.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform day-to-day network administration activities, security/firewall management, router/switch management, IP/VoIP routing troubleshooting, etc.
  • Perform day-to-day SAN administration activities, LUN presentation/creation, firmware updates, performance tuning, etc.
  • Support network hardware, including WAN devices, load balancers, firewalls, HP storage and blade servers.
  • Maintain system monitoring programs and respond to system monitoring alerts.
  • Recommend and evaluate network solutions to meet business needs.
  • Perform system backups and recovery, disaster recovery activities and regular plan testing.
  • Respond to system outages, identifying root cause and troubleshooting as required.
  • Perform technology needs analysis based on the computing infrastructure plan.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of current communications devices, server and desktop technologies, remote user access, multi-node networks including firewalls.
  • Ability to function well in a reactive mode, responding to technical problems with a sense of urgency as they arise.
  • Ability to identify, articulate and troubleshoot technical problems in a “live” environment, under quick deadlines and turnaround requirements.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and effectively deal with sensitive information.
  • Strong client focus and the ability to work with employees at all levels.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as in a team environment.
  • Demonstrates well-developed analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrates resourcefulness and judgment to resolve problems of a moderately complex technical nature.
  • Demonstrates good judgment and decision making skills.
  • Ability to manage conflicts between team members and/or other stakeholders.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

Education & Experience:

  • Community College Diploma, with a focus on Computer Networking and Technical Support, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Three to five years of experience in a network administration role, involving servers, desktop systems and communications, or equivalent.
